Crazy Hair Day @ BIS 4

Crazy Hair Day was held today at British International School of Moscow. It was a really fun, out of ordinary event that allowed me to unleash my creativity and support my good friend Julien Caron who was responsible for organizing it.

Together with Alyona Sukhova we took inspiration from one of pop icon Lady Gaga's music videos - "Telephone". The concept of our hair style was to roll sections of hair onto coke cans and as impossible as it sounds at first, in reality making such hair style only takes 3 cans of coke (empty cans are strongly advisable), 9 hair clips of your hair color (we had to paint ours), 30 minutes of your morning routine and loads and loads of hair spray to keep your "curls" intact.

At first I was doubting our idea but then, motivated by peculiarity of the hair-do and the prize for the best hair style, we went for it. This is what I looked like for the entire day in school:

People at school responded very well to our creativity - I had a lot of people approaching me with compliments. We won the contest and I am glad that I have overcome the fear of public humiliation which was definitely a challenge for me.

Даты - Восьмое Марта

From the title of this post you may probably deduce that I will be talking about my tutorship of russian language.

Last week I have asked Mme Merlet of what she would like to go over with me and she asked for dates and time. Whilst I have scheduled the topic of time for next week, dates were covered today. Since my student already had some knowledge of how to express dates in russian, we have spent about 10 minutes recalling that and afterwards I asked her to read the text about International Women's Day that I  myself have prepared at home. I have learned a lot of background information about that day and was delighted to share it with Mme!

EE and CAS collaboration

Today is Wednesday and Wednesday means CAS session during periods 5&6. Today our CAS co-ordinator Mr Parker used this time to introduce Extended Essay to us.

At first we were given a copy of EE guide and a question sheet. I was familiar with the guide already so answering questions on it was not of any problem for me. Working collaboratively with Natasha I quickly answered all of the questions and highlighted important bits in the guide.

Shortly after we have moved on to another activity that was very similar to the one we did in our first CAS session. It required us breaking up into groups and running to the other side of the sports hall to memorize EE outcomes and run back to dictate to the person responsible for writing those down. I thought it could have been a very effective activity for our group if only we didn't break each outcome down in half so that one member memorized the first half whilst the second member kept in mind the other half. At least we were able to complete the whole list of outcomes.

Our third and final activity was to devise a short play based on a list of requirements of the student and the supervisor in process of completing EE. I found it the most challenging task of all because we were given a very limiting amount of time - 20 minutes - and it was difficult to come up with an idea for a piece of drama and to incorporate the list of requirements in it. By the time my group came up with an idea and talked through it, the time was up and we did not get a chance to rehearse the play. Nevertheless I think it was a good time management activity and an opportunity to reminisce of good times during IGCSE drama.

The session was very enjoyable for me except for the fact that I learned that we were not allowed to write our EE for the subject that we are not currently studying. This put me into disappointment because I have genuine interest in area of abnormal behavior which is covered in psychology course that I am not studying.

CAS Outcomes met:
- increasing awareness of strengths and areas for growth
- working collaboratively with others
- developing new skills
