My Attempt to Sing.

A couple of days ago, my sister Polina (polinasemochkinacasblog.blogspot.com) has asked me to sing along to the latest song that she had learned to play on the piano. The song is called "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol. By posting this video I am being a risk-taker because I've never taken singing lessons and don't usually take negative comments about my voice too well. Nevertheless I am posting this now because I feel like this activity had covered a number of CAS objectives such as undertaking new challenges and working collaboratively with others.

Playing Tennis at a local court.

As I already mentioned in my CAS plan, I have arranged the time with my former tennis teacher on Tuesdays and Thursdays for me to practice playing tennis and get as good at it as I possibly can.
Today was my first practice and I absolutely loved it. Holding the racket after so much time felt weird at first but I quickly got used to it and remembered some of the skills. I'm glad to realize that there is a lot for me to learn and I will be training hard to get better every week.

I can proudly say that during today's practice I have:
- proved to be an ACTIVE IB learner
- increased awareness of my strengths and areas for growth
- developed new skills

Cooking Club

Today I have spent my lunchtime learning how to cook Vietnamese Spring Rolls. They turned out to be very easy to make so I will definitely attempt to make them on my own at home.

During that activity I have:
- developed new skills (I was taught how to cook as well as how to slice the ingredients)
- worked collaboratively with others (I was struggling with soaking up rice paper so one of the girls present helped me out)

My First Ever Tutorial!

Today I have been inspired to share one on my creative ideas and make a nail art tutorial. When editing I added an old-movie effect in order to be even more creative but I turned out to be not as good as I expected it to. Please don't judge too harshly!

A special thanks to my sister for spending tremendous amount of time to record this vid. Polina's CAS blog: polinasemochkinacasblog.blogspot.com

CAS outcomes involved:
- undertaking new challenges
- planning and initiating activities
- working collaboratively with others

Cooking on a Saturday Night.

Yesterday, as part of my CAS plan, I did some cooking and I thought I should share that experience in this post. My favorite thing to cook are the desserts but I've decided to move away from that and to cook a main course for all of my family - the Vegetarian Lasagna with Spinach and Ricotta Cheese.
Down below you can see three stages of preparation and moi with the final dish.
I know the result doesn't look particularly attractive. That is because I added too much Béchamel sauce - there is always room for improvement, isn't there?
Nevertheless, my family loved the dish and I will definitely be preparing it again (except with less Béchamel).

During that activity the following CAS outcomes were targeted:
- developing new skills
- increasing awareness of strengths and area for growth
- undertaking new challenges

This is the CREATIVE representation of my CAS plan that I have hung up on my wall to remember to maintain my activities!

My CAS Plan.

Creativity:

- Handmade Crafting. For my creativity section I have decided to do handmade crafting during every weekend because during the past summer I've become very interested in that and have found a lot of youtube channels and instagram pages that taught how to do various DIY projects. Furthermore my intentions involve grouping with other students with the same interest, sharing our works and doing a fund-raising auction at our school around Christmas time to satisfy my service CAS section too.

- Cooking. This is definitely something I utterly adore so on the weekends I will be mastering my cuisine skills by cooking for my family at home and during cooking club every Monday. I also plan to do that for every fair that will be held at our school so that I will be able to share my favorite dishes with the rest of the students.

Action:

- Tennis. I have played tennis 4 years ago and I really enjoyed it but was forced to quit when the work load given to me at school started to take too much of my free time. However, now that our IB diploma obliges us to do physical activity, I thought that it would be a good idea to restart my training! I called up my teacher (the one that I was taught by 4 years ago) and we agreed to meet twice a week at a local court.

- Yoga. Practicing yoga is a completely new activity for me but I have always thought about doing it in the past. My mother, who has been practicing yoga previously, gave me the phone number of her former trainer and I have already made arrangements to be doing yoga on Sundays for 1.5h at the teacher's apartment.

Service:

- Russian tutoring. My french teacher, Mme Merlet, has kindly asked me to help her out with learning russian and I instantly recognized that as a CAS opportunity. From now on, every Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime I will be having conversations with her in russian as well as teaching her grammar and writing.

- Recycling Paper. I have always been annoyed by the amount of useless paper, carton and magazines at our apartment. Always. Quite recently, I have discovered a recycling point relatively near my house so I have decided to spend my weekends collecting paper (newspaper mostly) and recycling it all in the end of each month. I believe that this will target several CAS outcomes and will generally be a truly useful and unusual for me activity.

Introduction to CAS.

The IB program has finally started for me and the vital part of it is of course CAS. For me, just like for the rest of the yr.12 students, CAS is a completely new aspect of learning. Luckily our school timetable includes 1h 20mins of CAS session every week. Last week and the week before we were introduced to this program and had a chance to participate in two truly entertaining an educative activities.
First activity involved us breaking into groups of four and then into pairs. One pair was encouraged to run to the other side of a large hall and memorize the details from the picture of farm animals hung up on the wall. Then they would return to the other pair and mime whatever they could remember to the drawers. I, as a runner/memorizer, found this activity very fun but also challenging because I had to use my creative thinking to its fullest in order to explain what I saw without making a sound. In the picture attached to this post you can observe the result of our team-work.
Not to forget, our second activity also involved us breaking into groups and it was all about sharing knowledge and learning from others. Each person chose a certain skill that he taught to his groups mates and, thanks to the people I was in the same group in, drawing animals and making stars out of a rubber band and a fishbone braid are just a piece of cake for me. My personal skill was nail art, diagonal lines design to be more precise. This activity forced us to open our minds to new knowledge as well as to be reflective as we had a discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of each skill after the activity.

In conclusion, I would like to highlight certain CAS objectives that were met during the activities:
- planning and initiating activities
- working collaboratively with others
- developing new skills
